Description

The PIM-430 Dual Input Interface Module is designed for easy mounting and includes a convenient “snap-lock” mounting track that enables the module to be conveniently installed inside a host control panel or in any enclosure meeting the environmental requirements of the application.

The module is also available from the factory mounted in a NEMA-4X (IP66)rated enclosure (Option E) that can be mounted outside of the host panel in a remote location.

In order to ensure proper operation, each PIM-430 Interface Module requires regulated 24 VDC external power which is normally provided by the host control panel.

Each module contains a Green “Power On” LED indicator to provide visual confirmation that the module is powered.

One (1) set of Form C alarm contacts and one (1) set of Form C trouble contacts are provided for each detection zone and are used to interface the unit to a corresponding detection zone(s) in the host fire alarm panel.

The module’s alarm initiating circuits are non-latching and self restores upon clearing the cause of the alarm state. The host panel’s zone detection circuits are used to retain the alarm latch (memory) until manually reset.

۱٫Remove factory supplied 4.7K 1/2w end-of-line resistors (ELR) from terminal TB2 and install across the conductors at the end of each Protectowire run as shown on the wiring diagram. In Protectowire 2-wire applications, if one of the detection zones is unused, a 4.7K end-of-line resistor must be installed across the unused zone terminals on terminal block TB2.
2.Connect Protectowire Linear Heat Detector to the module using terminal block TB2. Refer to wiring diagram for specific zone or TRI-WireTM pre-alarm and high temperature circuit terminal designations. Important: To ensure proper TRI-WireTM operation, the polarity of the circuit must be maintained as illustrated.
3. Connect host panel’s initiating circuit end-of-line device across terminals 2 & 5 on terminal blocks TB3 and/or TB4 as required by the application. See host panel wiring specifications.

If polarity is required, connect (+) to terminal 2, (-) to terminal 5 on TB3 and (+) to terminal 5, and (-) to terminal 2 on TB4.

۴٫ Connect host panel’s initiating device circuit(s) across terminals 2 (+) & 3 (-) on terminal block TB3 and/or terminals 4 (-) & 5 (+) on TB4 as functionally required by the application.

Install jumpers between terminals 3 & 4 on TB3 and TB4. See host code or local authority requires grounding, connect terminal 6 marked E-GND on TB1 to earth ground.

۶٫ At the end of the Protectowire Linear Heat Detection run, open the circuit at the 4.7K end-of-line resistor. The yellow “Trouble” LED on the PIM-430 will light, and the host panel should report a trouble condition.

Reconnect the end-of-line resistor and the “Trouble” LED will extinguish and the host panel should reset to normal. Perform this test for each active Protectowire zone or the pre-alarm and high temperature alarm legs of the TRI-WireTM detection circuit.

Note: Manual trouble reset of the host panel may also be required depending upon the make and model installed.

۷٫ At the end of the Protectowire Linear Heat Detection run, short the circuit across the 4.7K end-of-line resistor. The red “Alarm” LED on the PIM-430 will light and the host panel should report an alarm condition.

To restore the system to normal, reset the host control panel. The PIM-430 Protectowire alarm initiating circuit(s) are non-latching and self-restore upon clearing the short from the circuit(s).

Perform this test for each active Protectowire zone or the pre-alarm and high temperature alarm legs of the TRI-WireTM detection circuit.

Alarm Point Location Meter Calibration(“D” Models)

After installation, the meter must be calibrated to compensate for the resistance of the copper feed wire between the PIM-430D Interface Module and the start of the Protectowire portion of the circuit. Adjust the meter per the following procedure:

۱٫ Disconnect all alarm and/or releasing devices from the host system before applying power to the module.
2. Connect a jumper across the Zone 1 detection circuit in the first zone box at the beginning of the Protectowire run. For TRI-WireTM installations, jumper across the low temperaturepre-alarm portion of the detection circuit (pink and blackconductors). 
۳٫ On the Interface Module, move and hold the meter read toggle switch to the left (ï) position. The meter will display the copper feed cable error.
4. To cancel out (zero) this value, adjust the “Meter Offset” potentiometer on the Interface Module using a small screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw until the meter reads zero.
Remove the jumper from the detection circuit, and reset the host control panel. For TRI-WireTM applications go to Step 6.

Description

The PIM-120 Protectowire Interface Module is designed for easy mounting using a convenient “snap-lock” mounting track that enables the module to be installed inside a host control panel or in any enclosure meeting the application requirements.
In order to ensure proper operation, each PIM-120 Interface Module requires regulated 24 VDC external power which is normally provided by the host control panel.

A Green “Power On” LED indicator is provided on each PIM-120 to provide a visual confirmation that the module is powered. One set of Form C alarm contacts and one set of Form C trouble contacts are provided on each module and are used to connect the unit to a corresponding detection zone in the host fire alarm panel.

The module’s alarm circuit is non-latching and self restores upon clearing the initiating circuit alarm state.The host panel’s zone detection circuit is used to retain the system’s alarm latch (memory) until manually reset.
Each PIM-120 Interface Module can be configured with a shunt diode barrier to provide an intrinsically safe Class B detection circuit for those areas that are classified as hazardous.

In this configuration the maximum length of Protectowire that can be connected to the circuit is 1,829m (6,000 ft.), however additional limitations may apply depending upon the specific requirements of the hazardous application.The shunt diode barrier limits the voltage and current in the detection circuit to values that are incapable of causing an explosion in areas that are classified as Class I, II, or III, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, D, E, F , & G. Only Protectowire Linear Heat Detector and/or a non-energy storing contact initiating device may be used on PIM-120 intrinsically safe detection circuits.The intrinsic safety barrier compatible for use with the PIM-120 is part number 9001/01-280100-101 as manufactured by R. Stahl Inc.

PIM-120 Commissioning Procedure

۱٫Install a 2.2K ohm 1/4w 5% end-of-line resistor (ELR) across the conductors at the end of the Protectowire run.

۲٫Measure Protectowire Linear Heat Detector loop resistance prior to connection.Total loop resistance should be between 2.2K and 3.7K ohms. Connect Protectowire Linear Heat Detector across terminals 5 & 6 marked DET (+) and (-) on terminal blockTB1.

۳٫Connect host panel’s end-of-line device across terminals 4 & 5 marked HOST ELD on terminal blockTB2. See host panel wiring specification, if polarity is required, connect (+) to terminal 4, (-) to terminal 5.

۴٫Connect host panel’s initiating device circuit across terminals 6 & 7 marked ALARM C & NO onTB2. See host panel wiring specification, if polarity is required, connect (+) to terminal 7, (-) to terminal 6.The host panel’s initiating device circuit must accept normally open alarm shorting and normally closed trouble opening devices.

۵٫Connect a regulated 24 VDC switched power source across input terminals 1 & 3 marked POWER (+) & (-) onTB1.Turn on power. Only the green “POWER ON” LED should be on and the host panel initiating device circuit trouble indication should clear. When grounding is required by code or local authority, connect terminal 8 marked GND onTB1 to earth ground.

۶٫ At the end of the Protectowire Linear Heat Detection loop open the circuit at the 2.2K end-of-line resistor. The yellow “TROUBLE” LED on the PIM-120 Interface Module will light and the host panel should report a trouble condition. Reconnect the end-of-line resistor and the “TROUBLE” LED will extinguish and the host panel should reset to normal. Note: Manual trouble reset of the host panel may also be required depending upon the make and model installed.

۷٫ At the end of the Protectowire Linear Heat Detection loop, short the circuit at the 2.2K end-of-line resistor.The red “ALARM” LED on the PIM-120 will light and the host panel should report an alarm condition.To restore the system to normal, reset the host control panel.The interface module’s Protectowire alarm initiating circuit is non-latching and self-restores upon clearing the initiating circuit alarm state.

Open-path Gas Detection Concepts

Not all gas clouds are hazardous – only if a flammable gas cloud or plume is wide enough to allow flame acceleration to speeds greater than 100 m/sec does it become a significant threat.

•Just as an athlete performing the long jump needs a run-up distance, so too a flame front needs distance to reach the velocities which cause the damaging effects of over pressure, pressure pulse and windage.

•The generally accepted quantity of gas that creates the potential to cause consequential damage if ignited is a cloud of the size 5 m diameter a stoichiometric concentration (about200% LEL).

•Location of the SafEye 700S Open-Path Gas Detector is less important than with point type detectors as it provides a warning alarm from a diluted gas cloud and does not need to be close to the leakage source.

Unique Detection Technology

The OSID system measures the level of smoke entering beams of light projected over an area of protection. A single OSID Imager can detect up to seven Emitters to provide a wide coverage area. Two innovations in smoke detection technology have been developed for the revolutionary OSID smoke detector.

Dual Wavelength Particle Detection

The beam projected from each Emitter contains a unique sequence of ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) pulses that are synchronised with the Imager and enable the rejection of any unwanted light sources. By using two wavelengths of light to detect particles, the system is able to distinguish between particle sizes. The shorter UV wavelength interacts strongly with both small and large particles while the longer IR wavelength is affected only by larger particles. Dual wavelength path loss measurements therefore enable the detector to provide repeatable smoke obscuration measurements, while rejecting the presence of transient dust particles or solid intruding objects.

Optical Imaging with a CMOS Imaging Chip

An optical imaging array in the OSID Imager provides the detector with a wide viewing angle to locate and track multiple Emitters. Consequently, the system can tolerate a much less precise installation and can compensate for the drift caused by natural shifts in building structures.

Optical filtering, high-speed image acquisition and intelligent software algorithms also enable the OSID system to provide new levels of stability and sensitivity with greater immunity to high level lighting variability.

Operation

Status information (Fire Alarm, Trouble and Power) is communicated through the Imager via Status LEDs, dedicated Trouble and Alarm relays, and the Remote Indicator interface. Specific Trouble (Fault) conditions are identified through coded flashes of the Trouble LED.

An internal heating option is also provided on the Imager to prevent condensation on the optical surface, and a reset input enables an external signal to reset the device.

Simple Installation and Maintenance

The OSID system consists of up to seven Emitters for the 90° Imager unit, located along the perimeter of the protected area, and an Imager mounted opposite. Each component can be mounted directly to the surface or can be secured with the supplied mounting brackets. Battery powered Emitters with three or five years battery life are also available to reduce installation time and cost.
